The SEQ is the streamlined and adapted version of the equalizer topology in the CEQ
Mastering Equalizer. In essence, one can mostly say that the SEQ contains the 'greatest hits' of the
flagship CEQ's frequency bands, stacked in stereo controls for simplified daily use and housed in a
2RU case to accommodate any engineer without being too cumbersome.
The core of the SEQ's discrete amplification, power supply, as well as selected capacitors and
custom wound inductors are the exact same as the CEQ's build. The position of the EQ symbols
highlight whether the control is a boost (graphic above) or a cut (graphic below) which mimics the
symbols themselves (low cut, mid cut and high cut, for example, are all below the knobs).
In lieu of the CEQ's more 'transparent' buffer amplifier, a new deep Class-A biased Line
Amplifier has been developed to bring a slightly more distinct sound that, romantically, gives a bit of
transformative craft when engaged. The Line Amplifier is DC coupled from input to output without any
capactors in the signal path.
The Line Amplifier is not a 'clone' of any existing recording amplifier topology – the gain stage
was created, voiced and adapted for the SEQ. The Line Amplifier can be inserted completely
independently of the EQ stage for greater flexibility of use, and has a gain range of -6dB to +14dB in
slightly less than 1dB steps. Both the Line Amplifier section as well as the EQ section are true bypass
by relays. The SEQ provides a direct, single ended output when either section is engaged.
Two toggle switches are on the front: the leftmost 'crescent' control is the Line Amplifier toggle,
and the amplifier level is above it. The EQ section switch is blue. The EQ stage always switches in the
path after the Line Amplifier. All controls are stepped with the exception of the Low Boost, which is a
carbon control.
SEQ Specs and Controls
– 6 Band, Fixed Stereo
Treble Boost: 15k (shelf)
Treble Cut: 10k (shelf)
Mid Boost: 4k, (bell)
Mid Cut: 1.3k (bell, active/passive hybrid)
Bass Boost: 70,(shelf)
Bass Cut: 50 (shelf)
– True Hardwire Bypass
– Fully discrete, through hole build design throughout – no surface mount or 'modern' transistor
equivalents substituted. NOS transistors used where critical. Every part is highly specific to
every voice and cannot be substituted without changes in tone and action.
– Design specific capacitors used throughout each band, including heritage paper-in-foil and
metalized (sputtered/vacuum deposited) foil caps and 'lo perm' toroidal inductors
– Input Impedance: Line Amplifier 10k; EQ Section ~20k
– Linear power supply (transformer based, non switching, regulated), +/- 24v rails.
